Read::Watch::Listen::Follow #4

This entry is part 4 of 4 in the series Read Watch Listen Follow

Welcome back to the monthly linkup where we talk about all the things we’ve been currently reading, watching, listening and following.

:: READ ::

Oh boy. Again, I haven’t read actual books, choosing instead to listen to them.

I started The Summer Before the War by Helen Simonson because I loved Major Pettigrew’s Last Stand so much. However, I’m only getting through one page per night because I keep falling immediately asleep. Plus, I so enjoyed the audio version of Major Pettigrew that I have now requested The Summer Before the War on audio on Overdrive. (Do you know about the Overdrive app? If you don’t you need to get it! You can check out audio books and ebooks from your library! Saves you money and keeps you free from clutter!)

:: WATCH ::

Yes, I was one of the crazy people who binge-watched the new Gilmore Girls the day it came out! But first I finished up Parenthood because Lauren Graham was in both and I was so close to the end of that one too. It was like I was sick because I stayed in my jammies all day and laid on the couch. However, I didn’t feel awful so it was fun! I need to have an all-day marathon watching break once a year. I don’t think I could do it more often than that.

Michael and I are still catching up on  This Is Us. We both really like it. Since I really like having something I can watch on my own, I started the Crown this week but I as I suspected, I think Michael will like this one too so I need to save it for when we are caught up on TIU and need something else to watch. I still need my own show so I may try the Good Wife based on Christy’s recommendation. Actually, I just searched it on Netflix and it isn’t available to stream??  Found it on CBS’s website but only the first 15 episodes are free. I guess I’ll have to keep looking. Any recommendations? I like shows about families. They can be comedies like Modern Family or serious like Parenthood.

:: LISTEN ::

I finished listening to Black Like Me by John Howard Griffin which was part of our school curriculum. It’s the story of a white man who turns himself black under the supervision of a dermatologist and lives life as a poor black man in the south. It’s an amazing story and I can’t believe how brave he was to do it. He revealed a lot of what it was like to be black and live in the south during the late 50s.

I also listened to After You by Jojo Moyes. It is the sequel to Me Before You. I liked how the author handled Louisa’s life after Will.

I tried Mr. Penumbra’s 24 Hour Bookstore by Robin Sloan but I abandoned it. I wasn’t loving it and who has time to listen to something you aren’t loving when you have so many other books on the TBR list?

I wanted to reread the Mitford series so I got At Home in Mitford but ran out of time before I could finish it. I have it on hold again. I just love these characters and their stories. *happy sigh*

In the meantime I got Penny from Heaven to listen to.  It’s a YA novel and so far it’s good. A little sad.

:: FOLLOW ::

This month, for “follow” I thought I would share some of my favorite Instagram accounts. These are also house related. I see a trend developing here…

First up is Denise from My Thrifty House.   She is great at DIY and repurposing. Her feed inspires me. I have a bowl very similar to this one and I want to do what she did.

Next is Sarah from 1915House.   She is another DIYer with a lovely home. This post had me drooling over the beauty of her simple tree!

And finally I follow Decor Steals which is a shop that I’ve become addicted to. I may have ordered these. They haven’t come in yet so maybe I just dreamed I did.

That’s it for this month folks! What have you been reading, watching, listening to or following? If you are a blogger, you can link up your posts below. If you aren’t, won’t you let me know in the comments?

  1. Ok, we have to find a good family series that you and Michael and PC and I can start watching. We loved Parenthood and we are enjoying This is Us. But we either need to watch more of Gilmore Girls or just agree that it isn’t our cup of tea. The first episode just seemed flimsy to me. Have you guys watched Homeland? House of Cards? They aren’t either one typical family stories by any means but they are good. I’ll start looking with some effort to find something and will let you know what I find.

    Listening to books has spoiled me forever on reading. I didn’t have much luck with Overdrive because most of what I wanted to “check out” from my library was on a waiting list. And then I would be under pressure to “read” it in a hurry so the next person could have it. I bit the bullet and bought Audible. I really like it so far. And need to remember to listen while I clean, craft, etc. I think I would probably like Major Pettigrew’s Last Stand.

    When do you do your blog reading? I find it so hard to get all the blogs I want to read read. So I hesitate to even look at any new ones. I need to figure out a schedule for myself and pray that life allows me to follow it.

    I sure enjoy this link-up. Hope you plan to continue in the new year. Hope I can remember to join you.

    1. I’m not familiar with either one of those. Home land sounds more police type and I’m not really into that. Really don’t know what house of cards is. I don’t need one for both Michael and me. I need one for me only. Chick flicky. GG was more chick flick. I liked the dry humor and relationships between the cast members.

      I think I get free Audible with our Amazon Prime. I need to check into that.

      I’m always behind on blog reading. I try to squeeze it in here and there. I really need to set “office hours” for blog related stuff and set time aside. That or just quit altogether which I’m really really considering.

      Which means I might just quit the link up. It doesn’t seem to draw many. Not as popular as fashion I guess. Haha!

      Thanks for joining me! ❤️

  2. Quit this link-up not quit blogging, right? I had to read this twice and then catch my breath before asking. Please don’t quit either. So what if people aren’t drawn to this link-up right now, maybe they will be in the future. Maybe we can figure out away to work fashion into it, too? But if you enjoy writing it, do it. Ha, I truly think no one reads anything I write. Truly. But I have decided I am not doing this for them, but selfishly, I am blogging for me. If what I write can in anyway help someone, or make someone laugh for a minute, that is icing on the cake. I love this link-up, though. And maybe it just needs a little more fine tuning in the new year.

    Homeland and House of Cards are neither one chick-flick material but they are very good.

    Have a restful Sunday.

  3. I’m late with my post. Hoping to get it published today and then link up.

    Other than a random episode here and there I had never watched The Gilmore Girls. With all the hoopla of the new mini-series, I decided to give it a try again. I think I started it about a month ago. I’m almost done with Season 1. Ha. Hopefully they won’t take it off Netflix before I get finished. At this rate it could easily take me a year. I just don’t watch much TV by myself!

    Rachel recommended The Crown so I want to try that soon, too. And we just started watching Designated Survivor based on Michael Ann’s suggestion. I think we watched 3 episodes yesterday… because we were 8 or 9 behind when we started it!

      1. Yes, I’m enjoying it more this time. Probably because I’m watching it in order. It’s not a show that lends itself well to random episodes, right?

  4. Hi Sheila, I added Helen Simonson to my “to read” list. I use Overdrive to check out books from my local library. I really like the idea of this type of link up. I hope you will keep doing it. I’d be happy to link up when I have a relevant post.

    I have been listening to “Revolutions” podcast by Mike Duncan (non-fiction), very engaging and educating. I listen to it when I walk or cook, it’s my treat to myself.

    1. Hi Mila! Thanks for stopping by!! I love the Overdrive app (except when it’s glitchy) and have read so many more books now that I can listen to them! I, too, listen while I cook and clean up. Also while I drive and do laundry. I’m not familiar with Mike Duncan. I’ll have to check that one out! I host the link up on the second Friday of the month if you want to plan some posts with that in mind! Glad to have you!
