I’m joining Anne of In Residence with her August “Currently” link-up where we’re talking about what we’re currently…
snacking (on)…
Nothing. I’m actually trying not to snack. A good friend lost a lot of weight by focusing on three meals a day, measuring all her portions and not cheating! I’m not always very good at it but I’m really trying to limit my food intake to three meals a day. Period.
anticipating…
A few days at the Breakers in Palm Beach with my hubby (work-related, folks. We aren’t made of money.) It’s been quite a few years since we’ve been there and I’m really looking forward to returning. This is a fancy Henry Flagler hotel/resort that was the playground of the rich and famous in the late 1800s into the early 1900s.
A week in the Keys with the kids. I know I’ve been talking about the Keys a lot lately but we get to go back again, and this time two kids are going with us! We are deciding whether we should go lobstering, fishing or just go snorkling. We are definitely renting a boat.
Road trip to see the solar eclipse! We haven’t done much planning for it but if we have to get up early and drive 4 hours then drive home we will! This is a once-in-a-lifetime event that I don’t want to miss!
borrowing…
Books from friends. There are a few titles that a friend has told me about that my library doesn’t carry. She said I could borrow them (on Kindle). I just need to get through my library stack first…
admiring…
This lady’s skill at repurposing old stuff! I spent THREE HOURS on Mother’s Day hopping all over her blog and marveling at her mad skills! Gave me the desire to do something like that so I found a desk at Goodwill and painted it with chalk paint! (Living room update post coming soon!)
purchasing…
Stuff for the house: Although I am trying to declutter and just get rid of STUFF, I am also updating and bringing cohesion to our house. I’m getting rid of stuff that doesn’t serve us, that doesn’t match, or that I simply don’t love. I have a pretty strong environmental bent and I really hate filling the landfill with perfectly good things. It pains me to see perfectly good stuff set out in the trash! Just donate it already! Donating things to thrift stores keeps it out of our landfills, gives the donor a tax break, gives the non-profit some income, and gives someone a great find! Ok. Rant over.
With that in mind, you might not be surprised to find out that I like to visit thrift stores and bring new life to discarded things (“One man’s trash is another man’s treasure!”) Here are some recent thrift store finds!
Grass Lamps – I found these for $7 each at Goodwill. I did have to buy new harps (the thingys that hold the shade) and new lampshades but I love how these look in my coastal livingroom! (I can remove the plastic now. I’m convinced that these “go” with the lamp.)
Milk glass – I have a bit of a milk glass collection. I like to hunt for new pieces that I don’t have but love. (I don’t buy every piece I find!) I have found a few new pieces so I had to split up my growing collection. It used to all be on the mantel. Now I’ve moved some to this cabinet:
Drapes – for my daughter’s room.
Aren’t the pompoms fun? They were a little long so I had to shorten them. With the remnants I made this little valence for the dining room:
I had to unstitch the pompoms from the side and add them to the bottom and then sew a pocket for the rod. (See that van in the backyard? More on that in a future post…)
Stuff for me:
I’ve updated some shoes this summer and I’m loving these new gold-toned sandals! They were so cute when I bought them at TJ Maxx. Then I wore them when we went out with friends and when I got home I noticed a tassel was missing!
We’ll shoot! Now what? They were practically brand new and oh so comfy! I didn’t want to lose them! So I put on my thinking cap and came up with a solution. I rummaged through my button box and found these:I pulled off the other tassel. (Waaah! They were so cute!)and ended up with these:
The buttons have a loop on the back. Thankfully, they are made of plastic so I just cut the loop off.
Then a little hot glue…
And they were as good as new!
Now I can wear my comfy fun flats again! Took all of five minutes!
These shorts I’m wearing are from Land’s End. Aren’t they fun? I love that they have different lengths. These are 7″ and I think they are the perfect length for THESE legs. I’ve also gotten a few tank tops from Land’s End on their clearance sale. Their cotton is high quality and so soft!
So tell me…What have you been up to lately?
I love your desk! Funny story – I just gave away a desk just like that to Goodwill – I was trying to give it away and convince people that they could paint it (like you did) and make it really cool – but no one wanted it. I would have kept it but I needed a larger work space with drawers.

That is CRAZY that it might be the very same kind of desk! I actually need another one for my son’s room! Too bad you can’t mail me THAT like you did the boots! Haha!!
Those sandals are perfect! The eclipse is going to be amazing!
Thanks Andrea! I’m really looking forward to it! Are you in the path?
Love the idea of not snacking. That should be my next thing I do- just recently cut alcohol.
YOU DID?! ? I’ve cut way back but I still drink on date nights ?
Oh how awesome that you fixed the problem of the missing tassel in those sandals by adding cute buttons instead–so creative! I love the drapes you got too–that pom pom detail is so fun!
I’m pleased with how they turned out! I loved the tassel but I couldn’t wear them with just one and I really wanted to wear them! I do love pompoms! I think I need some pompom trim on a scarf or pillow… Thanks for stopping by!
Love how you DIYed your sandals. Too cute. I think glass milk bottles are too cute, and great decor.

So much fun travel to anticipate!!! I really enjoy following your travels and your home decorating. Nice save on the sandals! VERY clever. Those curtains are SO cute! I just bought some new ones to go on the sliding door in my dining room. Can’t wait for you to see them! They’re very simple, but they soften that area, so I’m pretty excited.
I can’t wait to see them ((IRL too!!) That’ll be so fun!
You did a great job on the lamps! Just what I had in mind!!! Can’t wait to see the rest of your “list”!
Oh yay! I had my fingers crossed that they would work! Good to have your stamp of approval!
Wow, those lamps were an amazing find! Love the drapes too. And I think I have one of those exact same milk glass vases! I have only a couple of pieces but would love a bigger collection.
I actually walked away from the lamps at first. I came back to this Goodwill with my son a few days later and they were still there! I snatched them up! I like to hunt for milk glass pieces I like. It’s a fun hobby! ?
Look at you being all crafty and stuff! Good job lady! 🙂
Ha! Right?! Thanks!
I prefer the buttons to the tassel(s) on your sandals. Way to save them! So frustrating to have had to “fix” a brand new pair of shoes. But well done!
I bought those same curtains (I bet they are the same) for Lauren’s guest bedroom. Hers were super long, too. But neither of us sew, so guess what? They stayed super long. Way to alter yours and make a valance out of the extra length.
Will you have a pretty good view of the eclipse in Florida? When we were back in KY visiting my mom this spring, everyone back there was very hyped up because they are supposed to have a terrific perspective of the eclipse in the Lexington area, with about total darkness.
Good girl for not snacking. I have to get back on track. This has been a chubby summer.
The total eclipse is not viewable in Florida. We are gonna road trip! We’ll stay with Michael Ann and then drive closer. It is viewable in SC. Vacationing is hard on the waistline for me and I’ll be doing a lot of that in the next couple of weeks!
